World War II Epic "Dunkirk" Rises As The No. 1 Movie At Box Office

Nolan’s Dunkirk is still the No.1 Hollywood movie for the second straight weekend. The critically acclaimed film grossed another $28.1 million, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations, for a total of $102.8 million since it debuted last weekend and became the first non-franchise film to top the charts this summer.

"Dunkirk" features singer Harry Styles in the retelling of the 1940 evacuation of hundreds of thousands of Allied troops from a beach in northern France under constant German bombardment 26 May to 4 June 1940.

The glowingly-reviewed war movie from Warner Bros smoothly navigated $200M across the worldwide milestones with $131.3M and $234.1M, respectively. According to the Newyorker, "With “Dunkirk, Nolan has made what may be the first V.R. movie—one that does its best to put viewers literally into the position of combatants and participants in the Dunkirk rescue, as if viewers were meant to fill in the blanks of the characters’ inner lives with their own and imagine themselves to be fighting the Second World War for the very preservation of Great Britain."

Review by the Independent, "Dunkirk is an unusually linear film from the writer-director (Memento, The Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar), centering exclusively on the evacuation of Allied troops who found themselves surrounded in Dunkirk, France during the Second World War.

There's no political context provided, no worried families back home; it's focused entirely on the race to rescue soldiers itself and as such is tense and battle-orientated from start to finish. Nolan does allow himself one piece of trademark narrative disruption though, the chronology of the film not being as straightforward as it initially appears."
